Daily Devotional

October 27

19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. 20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. (1 Corinthians 4:19-20 KJV)

Paul is telling these people that he will come to them shortly, if the Lord will, and we should learn something from this. We should not assume that we can just do anything we want, and go wherever we want, when we want to, as we should always consider if it be Godís will (James 4:15). God has given us humans a free will, but if we are following Christ, as we should, then we should always consider if what we are planning is what God wants us to do (Proverbs 3:5). We should always be led by the Holy Spirit in all we do, so that our efforts will glorify God and further His Kingdom. Us humans like to think that our ways are always best, but that is not so. God always has better plans for us than we can devise by ourselves. We need to always listen to Him (Proverbs 3:6).

Paul is saying that he will come to them in power of action, not just puffed up speech. This is so true that the kingdom of God is not just words, but power (2 Timothy 1:7). This sure is different than most preachers teach, as all they teach is doctrine, or words, but most do not ever demonstrate any of Godís power. If the churches would get back to teaching the full Gospel, and include the power of healing, prosperity and deliverance, along with the Word, then we could make the same kind of influence on our world as the early Christians did on theirs. God promises that we can have signs following the preaching of the Gospel (Mark 16:20), but preachers have to believe to receive it. Signs following, of course, means the demonstrated power of God, through healing, deliverance, or any of the spiritual Gifts. One of the signs of the end times is the lack of power in the churches, and that sure is happening today. Let us teach the Gospel with power!
